Hi, my name is Kate.

Hi, my name is Kate.

Well, it’s a little more complikated than that.

According to the government, I’m Kathleen. But unless my parents are yelling at me, I rarely answer to it. I was named after my grandmother who spent her life stuck being called Kathy. To avoid history repeating itself, Kate was the strategic nickname given to me at birth.

I’ve collected a lot of names along the way, and they all represent a different piece of who I am.

To my dad, I’m Kitty Kat. It started with a childhood stuffed animal but now serves as a constant reminder of my roots and gratitude for my family.

To my first dance mentor, I’m Katie B. I usually correct people who call me Katie, but she’s the one person I make an exception for.

I am Miz Barrett to the younger students I’ve taught. That name is special to me because it was the first time I felt a true sense of leadership and responsibility.

I am “BB” Barrett to my college friends. What started as a running inside joke eventually evolved into creative fuel, even inspiring the name of a sideline routine I choreographed.

And finally, I am K8. Born from a Halloween costume idea (featured in the image to the right), this is the nickname I’ve given myself as it reflects my creative side.

I answer to all of them, but you? You can just call me Kate.
